Happy Johnny Appleseed Day!  The Kindergarten took the afternoon to celebrate the legendary John Chapman, best known as Johnny Appleseed, on the day after his birthday.  We thought it fit quite nicely into our Apple Unit.

The Kindergarten classes had a wonderful time at County Line Apple Orchard last week.  Thank you so much to all of the chaperones who were able to join us!

We hope that your family enjoyed all the apples that we picked!

Request
As a part of our Apple Unit, each student needs to bring in an apple by Friday for our apple graph.  In order to ensure that each color of apple is represented in our taste test, we're asking that each student bring in only the type of apple that is assigned to them.  Thanks!

Wednesday September 15th, 2010

What a week it's been so far!  So many exciting things have been happening!

Tuesday was Kindergarten's first day of gym class!  Coach Fogarty and Miss Morris said that Room 7 was very well behaved on the bus on the way to UIC.  Some of you may have noticed that your child came home with an out of uniform slip on Tuesday afternoon.  The sweatpants that the students wore in preschool are NOT a part of the gym uniform.  The gym uniform pants, shorts and t-shirts (with OSM logo) can be found through Land's End.  Also, students should come to school each Tuesday wearing their gym uniform.  They will continue to wear it all day.  Proper gym shoes are a MUST on Tuesdays.

Field Trip
Both Kindergarten classes will be visiting County Line Orchard next Thursday!  Students will need to bring their lunch in disposable containers and will be allowed to wear play clothes.  Don't forget to check the weather!  Rain or shine we'll be on our way!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to come with us to the Apple Orchard!  The chaperones for this field trip will be:

Romeo Vasquez
Blaga Seng
Lori Fanning
Sara Broderick
Renee Barrera

Please be at school no later than 9:00 on Thursday and don't forget your lunch!

Announcements
-  This week Miss Danielle and I have been testing the class on their phone number and address.  We were surprised to find that not a single member of the class knew both their home phone number and address.  This is a very important skill for the safety of your child.  Please review this information with him or her at home.
-  Scholastic Book Orders are available both online and in paper form.  The paper forms will not be coming home until October 1st, but online ordering is available any time.  Online Ordering Information:

Week of September 7th to September 10th

What a week!  We had so much to do in such a short amount of time!  Our theme this week was the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  We used this book as the starting point for many activities; letter sorts, uppercase and lowercase matching games and coconut counting.  We also used Chicka Chicka Boom boom to start our poetry unit.  Each week we will use a different theme poem as a tool for studying rhyming and sight words.  Look for your child's Poetry Binder to come home on Fridays.  Please read that week's poem, then just sign and return!

Our letter of the week this week was "S".  We talked about how it hisses and read special "S" poems.  Ask your child if they can name any words that begin with the "S" sound!

We started using our toolboxes during Writer's Workshop this week!

We are getting much more used to writing on our own now...

The Week of August 30th - September 3rd

We had a wonderful first full week in Kindergarten!  Our letter of the week this week was M.  We did lots of hunting for M's and practiced writing them with our pencils.  We also started Writer's Workshop this week and learned that it's best to write about things that we know.  We would LOVE to write about being princesses, but we don't know anything about princesses.  So it's best to write about us.

We also read the book Do Unto Otters and wrote our Room 7 Classroon Rules.  We wrote them together so that we are all responsible for them.

Our Math chapter this week focused on Sorting.  We did lots of sorting this week, both as a class and in our homework.  You may have noticed that a Math Game went home on Monday.  These games will go home at the start of every chapter.  Just play them with your child, sign it and return to school.  This way we know that you are enjoying our Math chapter as much as we are!

Reminder
-  All homework needs to be done in pencil!  This is what we use to write in school so it's good to practice with it at home too.

Announcements
-  The Celebrity Reader sheet was lost after Meet and Greet Day.  I apologize for the inconvenience.  Please email me if you remember what day you signed up.  This way I can get an accurate list out to fill up any remaining slots.  Thanks!
-  The class hamster, Hamilton, is available for pet-sitting during breaks and long weekends.  Please let me know if you are at all interested in giving him a temporary home!

Requests
-  We are in need of a few items.  If you could please send any of them in, we would really appreciate it!
      -  disinfecting wipes
      -  paper towels
      -  thin dry erase markers

Thank you so much for making this school year get off to a fantastic start!

Enjoy the long weekend!  See you on Tuesday!
